English Department, Universitas Negeri Padang positively held the Creative Writing Seminar and Workshop (CWSaW) 2025 on Saturday, October 11, 2025. The event was held at Auditorium FBS. It was attended by students from three studies programs, which are English Education, English Literature, and Japanese Language Education.

The event was officially opened by Dr. Havid Ardi, S.Pd., M.Hum., Vice Dean for Student Affairs of FBS, and Dr. Yuli TiarinaS.S., M.A., Head of the Department of English. They showed their gratitude for this innovative enterprise. In addition, Leni Marlina, S.S., M.A, as the chairman of committee highlighted how writing motivates students to enhance imagination, experiences, and critical thinking. The Creative Writing Seminar and Workshop (CWSaW) 2025 served not only as an academic activity but also as a platform to celebrate young writers within the English Department.”

The speaker of the workshop was Donny Eros, S.S., M.A., a lecturer from Universitas Andalas, a writer and a director, known for his attractive style to creative writing. In this seminar and workshop, he did not only deliver the materials but also guided participants in creating ideas, building creative thinking, and improving narrative structures. The practice segment allowed the participants to practice by writing short pieces, followed by interactive discussion. (SARI)

2. Launching Poetry Book in International Literary Event

The Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS), Universitas Negeri Padang proudly hosted a major literary event titled “Poetry Book Launching and International Online Seminar on Poetry” on Saturday, 31 May 2025. The event marked a special moment for the department with the official launching of a poetry book authored by Leni Marlina, S.S., M.A., a lecturer in the department and an award-winning writer recognized by SatuPena West Sumatra in 2025.Held in a hybrid format at the FBS UNP Auditorium and via Zoom, the event brought together poets, literary scholars, cultural figures, and students from across Indonesia and abroad. It began with a series of opening speeches delivered by representatives from the West Sumatra Provincial Government, the UNP Rectorate, the Padang City Government, and the Tanimbar Islands Regency, followed by remarks from Prof. Dr. Ermanto, M.Hum., Dean of FBS, and Dr. Yuli Tiarina, M.Pd., Head of the English Department.

The highlight of the morning session was the book launching of Leni Marlina’s poetry collection, which reflects themes of identity, nature, and womanhood. Known for her commitment to both academia and creative writing, Leni has continuously bridged the worlds of scholarship and art through essays, cultural commentary, and poetry. Her latest work further solidifies her voice as a strong figure in Minangkabau and Indonesian literature.The event also featured live poetry readings by prominent poets including Prof. Hasyim Yaacob (Malaysia), Vo Mai (Australia), Tatang Rusmana (Indonesia), and Leni herself. A captivating Rabab performance by Dean Prof. Ermanto added a local cultural flavor to the literary celebration.Two engaging book discussion sessions followed, featuring speakers such as Eka Budianta, Anto Narosoma, Rizal Tanjung, and Paulus Laratmase, moderated by English Department lecturers Witri Oktavia, M.Pd., and Senorica Yulia Sari, M.TESOL.

Young poets, including Afiqa Clarissa Makmur, also participated by sharing their voices and verses with the audience. The afternoon continued with the International Online Seminar on Poetry, where more poets and scholars from around the globe exchanged perspectives on the role of poetry in the modern world. This event served not only as an academic forum but also as a celebration of creative achievement from within the English Department itself. The success of Leni Marlina’s book launch stands as an inspiration to both students and fellow lecturers, proving that academic excellence and artistic expression can go hand in hand. (HY)

Leni Marlina Named Outstanding and Prolific Writer by SatuPena West Sumatra 2025 – English Literature FBS Universitas Negeri Padang

Leni Marlina, a lecturer in the English Language and Literature Department at the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS), Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP), has been named Outstanding Writer 2025 by SatuPena West Sumatra. The award was presented during the gala dinner of the 3rd International Minangkabau Literacy Festival (IMLF-3), held in early June 2025 at the royal complex in Padang.

The festive evening served not only as the closing ceremony of the event but also as a moment to celebrate the power of words and honor those who have dedicated themselves to the written world.Leni received the prestigious title alongside Ramli Djafar, who was recognized as Prolific Writer 2025. Their selection was the result of careful curation by three respected literary figures—Saunir Saun, Yurnaldi, and Armaidi Tanjung. Leni stood out for her commitment to producing thought-provoking essays, articles, and literary pieces that reflect the Minangkabau spirit and values. Her works, often written in English, are part of her mission to share local perspectives with the world.

“The digital world has no boundaries. Information from our land must be able to reach international readers,” she said, emphasizing the importance of cultural translation through writing.The recognition reflects Leni’s deep dedication not only to academia but also to public discourse and cultural preservation. As noted by SatuPena West Sumatra Chairperson Sastri Bakry, the awards are a tribute to consistent literary effort and influence.
